Today, we’re looking at “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, as performed by Andy Williams. Yes, this is one of the most famous versions of the song, and to be honest, there aren’t really any contemporary versions that can hold a candle to it. Sometimes, the standards are the best, y’know.
This is a favorite of mine simply because of the energy this song can bring — and the accompaniment drives home the point that is is the Most Wonderful Time.
There was something that always puzzled me about this song. The bridge contains the lyrics “There will be parties for hosting, marshmallows for roasting and caroling out in the snow. There will be scary ghost stories and tales of the glory of Christmasses long, long ago.”
Okay, let’s look at that. Parties for hosting — check. Marshmallows for roasting — sure, I guess so, maybe in a fireplace. But scary ghost stories? What the heck is this, Halloween?
At first I thought maybe it was talking about Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, with the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. But a friend of mine said that telling ghost stories is an English tradition. Who knew?
(No ghost stories at my Christmas, though. Nope.)
Tomorrow - it’s rock opera time.
