The Music of Christmas - Intro
December 1st, 2006 by Phil
Ah, it’s the holiday season. Everywhere you look, people are getting ready for their holiday celebration — or multiple holidays and/or celebrations.
One of the things I love about Christmas is the music. I’m a big fan of Christmas music… within reason. I think it’s a bit ludicrous for radio stations to flip to their 24/7 Christmas music format before Thanksgiving. Here, we had one station flip on the 10th, another flip about a week later, and two more on Thanksgiving. (Could be worse — in Chicago, a station flipped on November 3rd, over 7 weeks of straight Christmas music. That’s a bit much folks.
That aside, now that it’s after Thanksgiving, I can truly enjoy the music of the season. So each day between now and Christmas, I’m going to write about one of my favorite Christmas/holiday songs. I tried to keep it to twenty-five songs, since Christmas falls on the 25th. I couldn’t do it. So, while this series will last 25 days, expect a few days with bonus songs.
Now, this list is not in any particular order; this is not a “Top 25 (Or So) List”. I fully expect your musical tastes to differ from mine, and I fully expect a couple of these to be down right embarassing. But this is my list, not yours, so tough.
As I scan over the list, about fifteen traditional Christmas songs are represented in one form or another, but very few of them are the traditional arrangements. For the most part, none of the songs are repeated, but of the ones that are, well, that’s why we have bonus days of more than one song. There are a few parodies and comedy songs in here, too, as well as a medley or two. And, there are a few songs that are guilty pleasures of mine; I fully expect to get some ribbing on these.
Got all that? There won’t be a test later, but reread that paragraph if you’re lost.
So join me as I present - The Music of Christmas.
Later today — We begin with the song that gives this blog series its name.
