House, S3E4, Or “Is Phil Dense?”
September 20th, 2006 by Phil
So, last night’s episode of “House” — I enjoy seeing Joel Grey, especially after his turn as the faux Arvin Sloane in “Alias”. He got all the nuances of Ron Rifkin’s character down pat in that ep, it was eery. So, having him in one of my favorite shows was great.
(Oh, before I go any further, SPOILER ALERT!)
This was an episode that will probably polarize the fans — after all, it deals with euthanasia. I didn’t think that House would actually kill Ezra after the 24 hours were up; the episode was only half over. However, everyone on the show did an oustanding job going over the ethics of such a decision.
Besides the “Is it morally right to kill someone who’s terminal?” debate, we have a side-debate of “Is a man worthy of pity or help if he does something that we find morally abhorrent?” Ezra’s experiments injured babies to save countless others — do the ends justify the means?
Not to mention, that we see some genuine respect from House — first, to Ezra as he respects the man and what he’s done for the medical community. Second, we see him in an actual caring moment towards Cameron at the end. Honest emotion from her, and some real caring from him.
(Also, Leighton Meester — who I remember from “Veronica Mars” — looks incredible as the almost-18 teenage girl who seems to be attracting House’s eyes. But back to the actual story.)
However.
Am I dense?
At the end, I figured Cameron was crying because Ezra had died. It wasn’t until I read Scott Keith’s views on his blog that I suddenly saw a differing opinion. Cameron was in the chapel crying. Why would she be that upset? Why would she be in the chapel?
Did she kill Ezra?
If so, why didn’t I see it that way?
